Dear Judy,
My heart is full. My wife, daughter and I just got home from the movie theater after seeing “Are you there God? It’s me Margaret” and we can’t stop talking about how wonderful it was. Bella who is 21 and a student at SDSU, said it was like someone recorded her childhood and how amazing and timeless these themes are. My wife Carolina, who felt the pressures of religion from a young age as a gay child of jehovas witness parents, laughed and cried through the familiar scenes of searching for spirituality and meaning. But I loved it the most. (Evidently by shouting “there she is! It’s Judy!” Across the theater in the dog waking scene). The reason I know is because it brought me back to the very moment I first heard your book. You see my mom died when I was 11 after a long battle of cancer. But before she did, she borrowed a red hard back cover of your book in Spanish from the library When I was 10 yrs old my mother read “estas ahí Dios? Soy yo Margaret”. Teaching me the things about womanhood and life that she knew she wouldn’t have the chance to show me. It opened up conversations about boys, religion, family and love. I can still here her voice reading it out loud to me at night. The summer before she died I got my period ( while driving to Lake Tahoe for our last family trip). I remember she was weak from the chemo and slowly came to bathroom when I called in a panic. But she cried, with joy about being able to be part of that moment. I of course thought It was terrible and really inconvenient to have to go to a mini mart with my Latino father to buy pads because she was too ill to get back in the car. What a gift for her in her final months to have the vehicle of your story to leave a lasting memory of mother daughter bond with me. Even in a different language. The movie was well done and brought the book back to the forefront of my mind. But it also brought my mom back to the forefronts of my heart after all these years. And what a treat to look over at my daughter with laughter through tears relating to the characters and each other the way I did with my mom. Thank you for then and thank you for now. You are truly amazing
Daniela Guzman (47 San Diego CA).
Ps my 2 best friends and I still talk every Saturday am over coffee and through video, and talk about growing up in a Judy Blume world. One is an author (self published for now) and we recently competed your master class as a girls bonding time. Thank you for doing that too!

I am an 84 year old woman who was date raped at age 18 1/2. Because I felt that I was damaged goods, I married him and subsequently had six children (trying to avoid frying in hell for using birth control). As a result, I created hell on earth, having six children before my 26th birthday.
My children are all wonderful human beings. I have experienced verbal rape from my legally amputed husband in the past few years. It has felt to me like PTSD And I have had to see a therapist for this issue. I dread it happening again in a future contact.

Hi Judy,
I am 56 years old. I read “Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret”, when I was 10 or 11 years old. I had just moved to California from Canada. It was an awkward time for me in so many ways but I could resonate with Margaret. She got me through it.
I have never been religious, but to this day, I always ask, are you there God, it’s me, Leslie, when I need to speak to what ever is out there.
Thank you for everything!

Leslie

I’m watching Judy Blume Forever and am having the best walk down memory lane! The first book I read was Blubber, I read it in like two days, I couldn’t put it down! And I *never* read books when I was a kid so that is saying something! After reading Blubber I went and looked for EVERY Judy Blume book I could find! I think the next book I read was Starring Sally J. Freedman As Herself, then Otherwise Known As Sheila The Great, Iggie’s House and if course-MARGARET!! That book was incredible and my friends and I actually did those bust exercises, LOL! When I found out about Forever…I think I hid that one under my mattress, LOL, I couldn’t wait to read it. We all thought it was so steamy. And Wifey just cracked me up, I was a young adult by then. I’m now on a mission to download all your books to my Kindle so I can take the entire library with me wherever I go, and I am almost 59! You are an incredible writer! Thank you for not backing down to small minded people who don’t have a clue about life. You, with your books, made me WANT to read and I now read all them time! You madam are a National Treasure! 😉

Mrs. Blume-Cooper:
I am watching your documentary "Judy Blume Forever" and tears are streaming down my face. I am a 52 year-old Buddhist priest living in my hometown in the Florida Panhandle.I was a teen in the 80's and watching this film, I deeply regret that I only ever read one of your books "Then again, maybe I won't." I need to read your entire canon. As an openly gay man who is also a devout Buddhist I'm sure I will have a slightly different perspective4 than your early target demographic. I do remember the horrors of the Reagan years and I have a profound level of respect and admiration for you given the struggles you faced over the rabid attempts at censoring your work. I want to say thank you for fighting that fight and sharing your remarkable gift with the world.

With my undying respect and admiration,

Dear Judy Blume,
I just watched your great interview on CNN and thought I'd write immediately to request you as a subject for me to sculpt for the Canadian Portrait Academy annual exhibition. Basically I'm seeking just authorization to do ument your likeness versus a life sitting but if you've time for that as the late Prince Philip and Margaret Atwood did then all the better!
To prove I'm not a nut please see my web site and CV therein at www.christiancorbet.com
Thanks for everything Judy!
Best,
Christian

Hi Judy, I want to thank you for every word you’ve ever written. Watching Forever brought me back to a simpler time when I would lay in my bed at night as a girl, and then a young adult reading your incredible books. Your books were the first I ever read and really did teach me that other people have the same thoughts, and the same feelings that I had. I always wondered while reading your books if “I was the only one? The characters in your books were so relatable.
I always wanted to write to you, and thank you, but I never had the courage. I am so thankful I now have the courage. I really appreciate you Judy!

Loved your books. Now days I wish you could write a book about Menopause. If anybody could write something funny, or uplifting about Menopause, it would be you!
Best Wishes, Cindy

Updated thank you from 2006:
Years ago I was a single mom without a lot of cash but hoping to provide my 8 year old a very happy birthday. I wrote to you and you were so kind as to inscribe a picture of yourself with a birthday wish for Josh. Both he and I were thrilled. Seventeen years later he is quite the bibliophile. Thank you very much. -Lori

Judy, aloha and a very Happy Friday 04.28.23 to you. Congratulations on the movie.
I was thinking how wonderful it would be for everyone if you were the Governor of Florida. If you decide to run, please let me know. I'll be the first to contribute.
I hope every single one of your books becomes a movie and that huge red-carpet events take place all over Florida. In your face, book banners!
I loved Judy Blume Forever : )

Hello I have been a lifelong fan of all your books from the rip old age of 10 to your final book. I absorbed each of them and related to all those girls and women. I remember giggling at the adventures of Fudge and knowing the facade that Sheila wore for the world and Linda in Blubber whose pain I had felt in my younger years. I now have the great honour to share my love of you with my granddaughter who is now turning 10 years old. I am hoping she will get all I got out of all your books. Time for a new generation to have her JB collections.

I was watching Judy Blume Forever last night and just reliving a lot of really great memories of reading Judy Blume books. I recall not all her books were available at my local library and making my grandparents drive me around to neighboring towns to try and find them. Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing and subsequent books changed my life. I really related to the older brother in the story always being annoyed with my bratty younger brother (aka fudge). After that, I devoured any book by Judy I could get my hands on. Just great storytelling, real, and no apologies. Ms. Judy you're magical, and all kids should have access to and read your books. I wish I could give you a giant hug for the wonders you did with my life growing up with an abusive father and depression and really relating to the characters and getting lost in your stories. Thank you so, so much for these wonderful stories!

I had not read "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" before I did this. Each Easter I had been getting each of my sons something vaguely religious. When the oldest one was in fifth or sixth grade, I gave him Margaret for Easter thinking it might be slightly devotional. I still had not read it nor known the subject until he was in his early 30's when he asked me about this gift with, "What were you thinking, Mom?"

I just want to say a few things. My mom gave me Margret at age 12, and it made me feel like a friend was talking to me when my own friends didn’t talk about things like this, even though it was the 90s. My sister taught me that time in life was special, and my friends said it was horrible, and that’s all they said. I felt alone at that age. Especially because I was bullied and no one defended me. And also, as a writer, your documentary on Amazon Prime means the world. The details of a writer’s life, someone I loved reading, opens my eyes and also makes me feel not alone as a writer. You have helped me in so many ways, so I just want to say thank you. I read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Superfudge over and over, even as an adult. ♥️

I wanted to tell you I absolutely LOVED the movie "Are You There God, it's Me Margaret". It took me right back to when I was 12 years old.
I loved all your books, including your Adult books.
Please let me know if you will be writing anymore adult books.
I loved the cameo you had in the movie also.

Dear Ms. Blume
My name is Kristin Hehrer. I am 43years old and a substitute teacher from Westerville Ohio. I have been a fan of your books since I was in the fourth grade. I do not understand why some of your books are on the banned list because you only tell the truth to children.
I am writing to you for some advice. I have been told that I should write about my adventures living as a wheelchair user. However, I do not know that I have the capacity to write from the view of a child as you do. Most of my fun experiences happened as a youngster. Any advice you could give in regards to writing from that pound of view, would be most appreciated.
Thank you so much for being part of my childhood.
Warmest regards
Kristin

Dear Judy,
My name is Jasper and I am 26 years old. My mom introduced me to your books when I was a kid. In a time where rights are being repealed and books are being banned it's a blessing knowing that there is somebody like you who has been an activist through your realistic fiction and depiction of such genuine experiences. My wish is that any and all children have access to the guidance that your book affords them. Books that teach you to be kind and know that you're not alone with the thoughts that you once thought were solely yours.
I have dissociative identity disorder, meaning that I share one body with multiple personalities or "alters." The younger members of my system still seek solace and acceptance from your books. They've helped us ruminate on abuse and have unorthodox conversations about having feelings and desires of self exploration and how to do that in a manner that feels safe and innate rather than besmirched by others wrongdoings. For this I thank you immensely. Thank you for sharing your imagination, your vulnerability and for connecting with those who are younger. Wishing you blessings. Shalom.
